Preventative Medicine

Peoria Area Veterinary Group's primary objective is to keep your pets healthy and prevent illness before it occurs.  With the proper vaccines, routine physical exams, blood panels, fecal testing, and dental home care, we are able to increase the length and quality of your pets life.

Below are just some of the services offered as preventative care for your pet:

Routine Vaccinations and Examinations

Yearly examinations and vaccinations are a very important part of keeping your pet healthy and free from any diseases. During the yearly examination, the veterinarian will check their heart, lungs, eyes, ears, abdomen, teeth, skin, joints and weight. They will discuss any worries or concerns you may have and create a wellness or medical plan that benefits you and your pet.

Yearly examinations are also required if your pet is on prescription only medication or more frequently depending on the condition and recommendation of the veterinarian.

Routine vaccinations are recommended to keep your pet free from any diseases that are easily prevented through vaccinating. Rabies is required by law for all dogs and cats, but other vaccines are also recommended. In dogs: Distemper, Leptospirosis, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parovirus, Bordetella (kennel cough) and Lyme Disease. In cats: Feline Rhinotracheitis, Calici Virus, Panleukopenia, Chlamydia psittaci and Feline Leukemia Virus.

Vaccine courses normally start at the age of 6 weeks and continue at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks of age. At the 16 week appointment they will also receive their Rabies vaccine. The veterinarian will be able to discuss the proper protocol for your pet depending on their age and lifestyle.

Microchip Identification

Microchipping is a small chip that is implanted at the back of the neck between the shoulder blades of your pet. This identification system is a vital tool in reuniting lost pets with their owners. It is not painful and can be implanted at any age of the pet. Once your pet is registered in the national database it is there for life. All animal shelters and vets have scanners that can read the chip and make it possible to trace the number back to the owner. The microchips that we implant are international and can be read anywhere in the world. It is important that you keep your address and phone number current at all times with the registering company -Home Again is who we use.

Heartworm, Flea and Tick Preventative

Heartworm disease is prevalent in the area where we live and is spread by mosquitoes. It only takes one mosquito that is carrying the heartworm larvae to bite your dog to infect him or her with heartworms. These larvae take 3 to 6 months to mature in the heart and will eventually cause damage to the heart and even death as a result. The adult worms can live up to 6 years in the heart. To prevent this disease only takes a once a month preventative given either orally or applied topically to your dog and is very cost effective.

Fleas can cause anemia, intestinal parasites and skin problems if left untreated or not prevented. There are various treatments for flea prevention that are given orally or applied topically once monthly. We recommend prevention year round in order to ensure your pet and your house remain "flea free."

Certain species of ticks cause Lyme Disease which is transmissible to humans as well as dogs. Lyme Disease can be prevented by once monthly topical applications for your dog and a yearly vaccination.
