Peoria Area Veterinary Group encompasses our three veterinary clinics: Chillicothe Veterinary Clinic, Dunlap Veterinary Clinic, and Dunlap Veterinary Clinic II as well as Precious Pets Grooming. Our clinics offer a wide range of services by a variety of wonderful Doctors and staff in three convenient locations in the Peoria area.

Chillicothe Veterinary Clinic was established in May of 1999 by John W. Calhoun, DVM.  It was originally located at 320 West Cedar Street in Chillicothe, Illinois.  After three years of operation, the staff at Chillicothe Veterinary Clinic found that they had outgrown the 700 square-foot clinic and decided it was time to build a larger facility.  Our current location at 1310 West Truitt Avenue opened its doors in October of 2002.

Then in September of 2006, Dr. John took ownership of Dunlap Veterinary Clinic located at 4620 W. Cedar Hills Drive in Dunlap, Illinois. This clinic was originally owned and operated by Richard Calhoun DVM, Jim Withers DVM, and Marvin Mitchell DVM.

As we continued to grow, we realized it was time to continue expanding.  We have loyal clients from all around the city of Peoria and decided to open Dunlap Veterinary Clinic II located at 2815 West Townline Road in Peoria, Illinois. Our newest location opened its doors in October of 2007 and started offering Precious Pets Grooming services two years later.

Meet the Peoria Area Veterinary Group veterinarians!

John W. Calhoun, D.V.M.

Dr. John Calhoun was born and raised in Dunlap, Illinois.  He grew up hearing about the animals his dad (Dr. Richard Calhoun) would treat and joined him occasionally on farm calls.  Dr. John attended Western Illinois University where he earned his Bachelors degree before heading to the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine.  He received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1996.  Dr. John worked for the University of Illinois Dixon Springs Agriculture Station for a brief period of time before moving back to the Peoria area.  He opened the Chillicothe Veterinary Clinic in 1999.

Dr. John enjoys practicing small animal medicine and working with the families in our community to ensure that their pets receive the best possible care.  He enjoys community service and serves on the Board of Directors for the Pearce Community Center.  Dr. John and his wife, Dr. Lissa Calhoun, have three children: Carmen, Aaron, and Ryan.  In his spare time, John enjoys gardening, woodworking, and running.

Lissa M. Calhoun, D.V.M.

Dr. Lissa has been a veterinarian with the Peoria Area Veterinary Group since 1998.  Dr. Lissa was born and raised in Joliet, Illinois.  She attended the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana where she graduated with a Bachelors degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1994.  She received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1996 from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. It was during veterinary school that she met and married her husband Dr. John Calhoun. After graduation, they moved to southern Illinois where Dr. Lissa worked in a private small animal practice.  In the fall of 1998, Dr. Lissa and Dr. John decided to move closer to family and friends.  They joined Dr. Richard Calhoun and Dr. Jim Withers in practice at the Dunlap Veterinary Clinic.  Dr. Lissa loves the challenge of being a veterinarian and takes a special interest in surgery, orthopedics and ophthalmology.  She enjoys the variety of cases that general practice offers and is passionate about serving the community and mentoring young people.

In her spare time, Dr. Lissa enjoys gardening, horseback riding and spending time with her family and friends.  Dr. Lissa has three children: Carmen, Aaron and Ryan.  The Calhoun's are kept busy with their practices, kids, and a small farm on which they keep a variety of pets including dogs, cats, horses, ponies, chickens and ducks.

Missouri-Columbia in 2006 with a Bachelors of Science in Animal Sciences.  She then went to the University of Illinois and received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in May 2010.   Prior to becoming a veterinarian, she worked in several areas of the profession including the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center and an emergency veterinary hospital.  She is a member of the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association.

In her spare time, Dr. Brooke loves spending time with her family and friends especially if it involves activities like rollerblading, biking, swimming or other outdoor activities.  She shares her home with a retired racing greyhound named Delta, who is a very special dog, and two cats: Chloe, a tortoiseshell who loves to cuddle, and Oliver, a mischievous orange tabby who is always getting into something he shouldn't.

Our five veterinarians rotate between all three clinics although their schedules vary.  If your pets prefer to see a certain doctor, make sure to mention that when you call and and we will book your appointment accordingly.  Our customer care representatives, assistants, and technicians call one clinic "home" but you will see familiar faces hop between clinics occasionally as needed.  To learn more about our supporting staff, visit each clinics specific page on the website.
